WRL (.wrl, .vrml, Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is a 3D file format standardized in 1995 (VRML 1.0) and 1997 (VRML 2.0/VRML97). It describes 3D scenes — geometry, materials, lighting, textures and animations — as a text-based scene graph. VRML was the first standard for 3D on the web.

Are my WRL files uploaded?

No. Files you open from your device stay on your device and are rendered locally with WebGL. Only the public sample is requested from the server.

Is VRML still relevant?

VRML is largely a legacy format, superseded by X3D and glTF. However, many older 3D models, CAD exports and virtual world files are still distributed as .wrl, making a VRML viewer useful for accessing historical 3D content.

About this file format

WRL (.wrl, .vrml, Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is a text-based 3D scene description format, standardized as VRML 1.0 (1995) and VRML 2.0 / VRML97 (1997). It was the first ISO-standardized format for 3D content on the web, defining geometry, materials, lighting, textures, sensors and animations as a hierarchical scene graph. While superseded by X3D (its XML successor) and glTF, VRML files remain common in CAD exports, medical imaging and historical 3D archives.
