DAE (.dae, COLLADA — COLLAborative Design Activity) is an open standard XML-based file format for exchanging 3D assets. It was developed by the Khronos Group as a vendor-neutral interchange format, storing geometry, materials, effects, animations and scene hierarchy.

Are my DAE files uploaded?

No. Models you open from your device stay on your device and are rendered locally with WebGL. Only the public sample model is requested from the server.

Is COLLADA still relevant?

Yes. While glTF is becoming the preferred web 3D format, COLLADA remains widely supported by SketchUp, Blender, Maya and game engines as an open interchange standard. Many architectural and game models are still distributed as .dae files.

About this file format

DAE (.dae, COLLADA — COLLAborative Design Activity) is an open standard 3D interchange format managed by the Khronos Group. Based on XML, it stores geometry, materials, lighting, cameras, effects (shaders) and animations in a human-readable structure. COLLADA was designed as a vendor-neutral alternative to proprietary formats like FBX and remains popular in architecture (SketchUp), game development and as an intermediate format between 3D applications.
