OBJ (.obj) is a geometry definition file format developed by Wavefront Technologies in 1990. It stores 3D mesh data — vertices, UV coordinates, normals, faces and material references — as plain text, making it one of the most universal 3D formats.

Are my OBJ files uploaded?

No. Models you open from your device stay on your device and are rendered locally with WebGL. Only the public sample model is requested from the server.

Does OBJ include materials and textures?

OBJ stores geometry only. Materials are defined in a separate .mtl (material template library) file that references texture images. The viewer loads the geometry; material files are loaded when available alongside the .obj.

About this file format

OBJ (.obj), created by Wavefront Technologies in 1990, is one of the oldest and most widely adopted 3D file formats. It defines 3D geometry as plain-text data: vertices, texture coordinates, normals, and polygonal faces. Material definitions are stored in companion .mtl files. Despite its age, OBJ remains a universal interchange format supported by virtually every 3D application, from Blender and Maya to game engines and 3D printing slicers.
