3MF (.3mf, 3D Manufacturing Format) is an XML-based 3D file format developed by the 3MF Consortium (Microsoft, Autodesk, Dassault and others). It is a ZIP archive containing XML model data, supporting color, materials, slices and metadata — richer than STL.

What is the difference between 3MF and AMF?

Both are XML-based 3D printing formats. AMF (Additive Manufacturing File Format, ISO/ASTM 52915) came first in 2011 but had limited adoption. 3MF (2015) was created as a more practical replacement with broader industry support and richer features.

Are my 3MF files uploaded?

No. Models you open from your device stay on your device and are rendered locally with WebGL. Only the public sample model is requested from the server.

About this file format

3MF (.3mf, 3D Manufacturing Format), introduced by the 3MF Consortium in 2015, is the modern standard for 3D printing data exchange. Unlike the simple STL format, 3MF is a ZIP-based package containing XML that supports full-color models, multiple materials, component assemblies, slice data and custom metadata. It is supported by Microsoft 3D Builder, PrusaSlicer, Cura and most modern 3D printing software. AMF (.amf, Additive Manufacturing File Format, ISO/ASTM 52915, 2011) is the earlier standard it replaced.
