RGB555, 16 colors or 256 colors?
Choose by the intended appearance and detail budget, not a claim of hardware compatibility. Test the same prepared source and change one control at a time.

Workflow Playbook
Prepare one authorized image as a low-resolution limited-color texture, compare applied candidates and deliver a reviewed PNG, palette, parameters and asset evidence for engine testing.
Hubs
This workflow serves independent developers and artists selecting one retro-styled texture, not generating a complete game-ready material. Record rights, surface, target dimensions, background and must-retain details. Inspect source dimensions and alpha. Keep an original and a named working copy.
The converter accepts still PNG/JPEG/WebP up to 10 MiB and 32 MP, normalizing the source to at most 1024 pixels on its longest side. Animated PNG/WebP uses the first frame only. Processing in this converter stays in the browser; supporting crop, resize or review tools may upload files. Obtain permission before sending private artwork.
Crop only when it improves composition or meets a real requirement. Resize only when needed for preparation; the converter also resamples, so avoid chains of unnecessary reductions. Record source-to-working-copy changes. Use one prepared source across candidates.
Choose fit and background deliberately. Alpha is flattened before quantization, so a dark or light matte changes the candidate. If transparency is required, this output does not meet that contract. Example sizes such as 64 or 128 pixels are aesthetic tests, not hardware specifications.
Compare RGB555, 16-color and 256-color modes with controlled dithering. Change one setting at a time and press Apply before treating the controls as the current export: pending raster controls are not yet committed. Inspect the actual native-size PNG and a nearest-neighbor enlargement for lost labels, broken silhouettes and distracting patterns.
Download texture PNG, palette JSON and parameters JSON from the same applied candidate before another conversion. Use unique local names because downloads reuse filenames. The tool has no autosave. Parameters describe source dimensions, raster settings and preview state, not a self-contained project or a guarantee of identical rendering across browsers. Preserve the exact prepared input.
Image Difference is a pixel aid, not an artistic ranking. Compare equal dimensions and compatible channels; unequal inputs are stretched to a shared canvas and can mislead. Palette extraction samples dominant colors and does not replace the converter's full palette and index JSON. RGB555 mode and palette modes need not have the same palette-record interpretation; retain mode and used-color information with each result.
Use a PDF contact sheet with filenames to discuss alternatives, then return to original PNGs. Thumbnail scaling and PDF rendering are not pixel-accurate acceptance. Record why a candidate passes or fails. The 320 by 240 nearest-filtered 3D preview is illustrative: affine distortion and vertex snapping do not change exported texture pixels. It is not hardware emulation, a UV unwrap, a seamless-tile checker or a full material preview.
Keep the accepted opaque RGBA8 PNG, palette JSON, parameters, prepared source, candidate ledger and optional preview/contact sheet together with distinct names. This is not an indexed PNG or TIM/CLUT package. Color limits do not promise byte size, authenticity or compatibility.
Import the actual PNG into the target engine and separately verify scale, filtering, mipmaps, wrapping, color handling and surface appearance. If not tested, mark it pending; browser preview is not a substitute. Download local copies and hash final artifacts with SHA-256. Hashes identify copies, not quality. Related workflows handle general image conversion, broader geometry preparation or photo-proof selection; this workflow ends at one reviewed retro-texture handoff.
Workflow playbook
Read dimensions and alpha, preserve the source and specify the intended surface, target size, background and required details.
Crop or resize a working copy for composition or input limits. Avoid repeated resampling; record every preparation change.
Convert the same prepared image with selected RGB555/16/256-color mode, size, fit, background and dithering. Apply changes before downloading each candidate.
Inspect PNGs, use same-size differences as clues and sample palettes only for overview. Build a labeled PDF contact sheet for selection while retaining original-resolution images.
Choose by the intended appearance and detail budget, not a claim of hardware compatibility. Test the same prepared source and change one control at a time.
Choose framing before comparing colors. Transparency is flattened onto the chosen background; retain a separate original when alpha matters.
Inspect the actual PNG first. Affine distortion and vertex snapping affect the 3D preview only; verify filtering, UVs and scale in the target engine separately.
Download matching PNG and JSON files, record acceptance and engine-test gaps and calculate SHA-256 for the final local package.
