What is a GeoJSON file?

GeoJSON (.geojson) is a JSON-based format for encoding geographic data structures. It supports Point, LineString, Polygon, MultiPoint, MultiLineString, MultiPolygon and GeometryCollection types, each with properties. GeoJSON is the standard format for web mapping and location data exchange.

Are my GeoJSON files uploaded?

No. Data you open from your device stays on your device and is rendered locally on the map. Only the public sample dataset is requested from the server.

What coordinate system does GeoJSON use?

GeoJSON uses WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) geographic coordinates — longitude and latitude in decimal degrees. This is the same coordinate system used by GPS, Google Maps and most web mapping applications.

About this file format

GeoJSON (.geojson), standardized as RFC 7946 in 2016, is the open format for encoding geographic data structures in JSON. It supports Point, LineString, Polygon and their Multi-variants, along with Feature and FeatureCollection wrappers that attach properties to geometries. GeoJSON uses WGS 84 coordinates (longitude, latitude) and is the de facto standard for web mapping, used by Mapbox, Leaflet, Google Maps and most GIS and location-based services.
