1. Receding Galaxy Hα Spectral Shift
Astrophysics StudentBackground
Studying distant galaxy emission lines where high recession velocity shifts visible light into the infrared spectrum.
Problem
Determine the observed wavelength and band transition for the Hα line (456.8 THz, ~656.3 nm) from a galaxy receding at 0.5c.
How to use
Set motion direction to 'Receding', speed mode to 'β', β to 0.5, and source frequency to 456.8 THz.
Outcome
Calculates redshift 1+z = 1.732 (z = 0.732), observed frequency f = 263.73 THz, and observed wavelength λ = 1.137 µm in the infrared band.
