What is an MBOX file?

MBOX (.mbox) is a plain-text format for storing multiple email messages in a single file. Each message starts with a 'From ' line followed by the full email (headers and body). MBOX is used by Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Google Takeout, POSIX mail and many email archiving tools.

Are my MBOX files uploaded?

No. Mailboxes you open from your device stay on your device and are parsed locally. Only the public sample mailbox is requested from the server.

How many emails can an MBOX file contain?

There is no hard limit — MBOX files can contain thousands or millions of messages. The viewer lists all messages found in the file, though very large files may take time to parse.

MBOX (.mbox) is a family of plain-text formats for storing collections of email messages in a single file. The most common variant (mboxrd) starts each message with a 'From ' separator line followed by the complete RFC 822 email content. MBOX is used by Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Google Takeout (Gmail export), Eudora, POSIX mail and many email migration and archiving tools. It is the de facto standard for email interchange and long-term storage.
