KML (.kml, Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML-based format for geographic data, developed by Keyhole (acquired by Google) and standardized by the OGC. It stores points, lines, polygons, styles, network links and overlays, and is the native format of Google Earth.

Are my KML files uploaded?

No. Data you open from your device stays on your device and is rendered locally on the map. Only the public sample file is requested from the server.

What is the relationship between KML and GeoJSON?

Both store geographic data. KML is XML-based with richer styling and Google Earth integration. GeoJSON is JSON-based and is the web mapping standard. The viewer converts KML to GeoJSON internally for rendering.

KML (.kml, Keyhole Markup Language), developed by Keyhole Inc (acquired by Google in 2004) and standardized as OGC KML 2.2 (2008), is the primary format for Google Earth geographic data. It uses XML to store points, paths, polygons, ground overlays, styles, network links and 3D models. KML files can contain folders, descriptions, timestamps and custom icons, making them rich enough for complex geographic visualizations.
