GPX (.gpx, GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based format for GPS data. It stores waypoints (wpt), routes (rte) and tracks (trk), each with coordinates, optional elevation, timestamps and metadata. GPX is the universal interchange format for GPS devices and fitness apps.

Are my GPX files uploaded?

No. Data you open from your device stays on your device and is rendered locally on the map. Only the public sample file is requested from the server.

What is the difference between a waypoint, route and track?

A waypoint (wpt) is a single marked location. A route (rte) is a planned sequence of waypoints to navigate. A track (trk) is a recorded path of actual GPS points with timestamps, typically from a GPS device or fitness app.

GPX (.gpx, GPS Exchange Format) is the open XML standard for GPS data interchange, maintained by TopoGrafix. It stores three types of data: waypoints (named locations), routes (planned sequences of waypoints) and tracks (recorded GPS point sequences with timestamps). GPX supports elevation, time, speed, heading and custom metadata per point. It is the universal format for GPS devices (Garmin, Suunto, Wahoo), fitness apps (Strava, Komoot) and outdoor mapping tools.
