## Overview

Enter measured energy or biomass for 2–6 trophic levels (producers first) to recover each transfer efficiency, the Lindeman-style mean, 5–20% band grades, the weakest step, the share of producer energy left at the top, and a projection for a hypothetical next level.

## Inputs

- **Measured energy/biomass at each trophic level (T1 first, one per line)** (textarea): One positive value per trophic level, T1 (producers) first, separated by new lines, commas, or spaces. 2–6 levels.

## When to use

- You have field or literature values for energy or biomass at successive trophic levels and need the implied transfer efficiencies.
- You want to grade each step as low (<5%), typical (5–20%), or high (>20%) and flag the weakest link in the chain.
- You need the compounded retention at the top predator plus a mean-efficiency projection for one more level.

## How it works

- Paste one positive number per level, T1 producers first, using new lines, commas, or spaces (2–6 values).
- Each transfer is computed as next/previous × 100%, graded by band, and the lowest-efficiency step is identified.
- The tool reports mean efficiency, overall percentage of producer energy remaining at the top level, and the projected value of a hypothetical next level at that mean.
- Energy pyramids cannot invert: a later level larger than the previous one is rejected so you can check data order.

## Use cases

- Recover per-step and mean efficiencies from published grassland or estuary energy-pyramid numbers.
- Locate the limiting transfer in a four-level food chain for teaching or reporting.
- Test whether a fifth trophic level would still be viable at the observed mean efficiency.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many trophic levels can I enter?

Two to six positive values, with T1 (producers) listed first.

### What units should the numbers use?

Any consistent energy or biomass units; results are unitless percentages.

### What do the efficiency bands mean?

Below 5% is low, 5–20% is typical (the classic 10% range), and above 20% is high.

### Why is an inverted pyramid rejected?

Energy pyramids cannot invert; a later level larger than the previous one indicates reversed order or mixed units.

### What is the projected next level?

The hypothetical value obtained by applying the mean transfer efficiency to the current top level.
