# Subtitle Translation Sheet (CSV Excel)

Round-trip subtitles through the spreadsheets translation teams actually use: export SRT/VTT cues to a CSV or Excel table (index, start, end, source, target, notes) and re-import the filled sheet as translated SRT — timings locked, in-cell line breaks preserved, and semicolon CSV with UTF-8 BOM for European Excel.

## Overview

Translation vendors and review teams work in spreadsheets, not raw SRT: the established export gives every cue one row with its index, start and end timecodes and the source text, while the translator fills a target column and index and timing stay intact — the exact layout used by Subtitle Edit’s export and agency review flows. This workbench implements that round trip: the exporter writes #/Start/End/Source/Target/Notes with SRT-style timecodes as text cells, preserves multi-line cues as in-cell line breaks (the way Excel and Google Sheets store them), adds a UTF-8 BOM so Excel recognises non-Latin scripts on open, and offers comma or semicolon separators — semicolons are the safe default for European locales where the comma is the decimal separator. The importer reads the sheet back by header name (index/start/end/source/target/notes plus the common aliases text/original/translation/number), sniffs the CSV delimiter, accepts SRT- or VTT-style timecodes or raw milliseconds, and rebuilds translated SRT from the Target column with the original timings; cues whose target cell is still empty can keep the source text or be dropped, and a sheet with no translations at all is rejected as a business error rather than silently rebuilding the source. XLSX workbooks are read and written with the SheetJS engine, CSV with a strict RFC 4180 parser, so commas, quotes and newlines inside subtitle text survive the journey unchanged.

## Inputs

- **Subtitle or table file** (file)
- **Direction** (select)
- **Table format** (select)
- **Untranslated cues** (select)

## When to use

- Handing off timed video subtitles to freelance translators or review teams who work in Excel or Google Sheets.
- Rebuilding production-ready SRT subtitle files from completed localization tables without manual retiming.
- Formatting bilingual subtitle spreadsheets for European Excel users using UTF-8 BOM encoding and semicolon delimiters.

## How it works

- Upload a subtitle file (SRT, VTT) to export it into a spreadsheet, or upload a filled translation sheet (CSV, XLSX) to import it back into subtitle format.
- Select the processing direction and specify your desired table output format (comma CSV, semicolon CSV, or XLSX) or empty-target handling behavior (keep source text or drop cue).
- The workbench extracts or reconstructs cue indices, timecodes, source text, and target translations while strictly preserving in-cell line breaks and punctuation.

## Use cases

- Exporting locked-timing bilingual review tables for external localization vendors and linguists.
- Reconstructing synchronized SRT files from completed client translations delivered in Microsoft Excel workbooks.
- Auditing video translations side-by-side with original cues and translator notes before final burning or authoring.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which spreadsheet column headers are recognized on import?

The importer maps standard headers including index, start, end, source, target, and notes, as well as common aliases such as number, original, and translation.

### How are multi-line subtitle cues handled across formats?

Multi-line cues are retained as in-cell line breaks within spreadsheet cells and are parsed strictly using RFC 4180 rules so commas, quotes, and newlines remain intact.

### What happens if a translator leaves target cells blank?

You can configure untranslated cues to either retain the original source text or be omitted entirely from the rebuilt subtitle file.

### Why does the tool offer a semicolon CSV option?

Many European locales use commas as decimal separators; semicolon delimiters paired with a UTF-8 BOM prevent Excel from mangling columns or character sets upon opening.

### Can I upload a spreadsheet where timecodes use VTT formats or raw milliseconds?

Yes, the importer accepts standard SRT timecodes, WebVTT timecodes, and raw millisecond integer values to reconstruct the cue timestamps.
