# Secret Santa Draw Generator

Draw Secret Santa pairs with couple exclusions — no signup, no room, no organizer peeking. Sealed reveal cards, forward-ready private messages, optional wishlists, budget and exchange date, and a seed that reproduces (or reshuffles) the exact draw.

## Overview

Paste one participant per line, add exclusion rules like "Alice - Ben" to keep couples (or rivals) from drawing each other, and generate a complete, valid draw. The algorithm shuffles with Fisher–Yates and rejects any assignment that violates the rules — a uniformly random derangement, expected after ~e attempts (Sattolo-style single-cycle shuffles would not be uniform) — and falls back to constraint backtracking when exclusions get dense, proving honestly that no valid draw exists instead of silently breaking a rule. Results come as collapsed sealed cards the organizer opens or forwards one at a time, plus per-person copy-ready messages that each contain only that participant's match. Names can carry a wishlist ("Alice :: warm socks in size M") which is revealed to whoever draws them. Optional gift budget and exchange date are stamped into every message. A blank seed gives a fresh draw; reusing a seed reproduces the identical result, so you can regenerate or verify a draw later. Everything runs offline — no accounts, no emails, no data leaves the tool.

## Inputs

- **Participants (one per line)** (textarea): Alice Ben :: warm socks, size M Carol Dave
- **Exclusion rules (one pair per line, e.g. Alice - Ben)** (textarea): e.g. Alice - Ben Carol - Dave
- **Forbid reciprocal pairs (no A↔B mutual gifting)** (checkbox)
- **Seed (blank = random)** (text): reuse a seed to reproduce the exact same draw
- **Gift budget (optional)** (text): e.g. $25
- **Exchange date (optional)** (text): e.g. Dec 22, 2026

## When to use

- Organizing an office, family, or friend gift exchange where certain pairs like partners or roommates must not draw each other.
- Distributing matches privately via chat or direct messaging without creating user accounts, virtual rooms, or collecting email addresses.
- Auditing, sharing, or re-verifying an identical gift pairing later using a reproducible seed value.

## How it works

- Input your participant list with one name per line, optionally appending gift wishes using the double-colon separator.
- Add exclusion rules (such as partners or housemates) and configure optional constraints like forbidding direct reciprocal pairings, setting spending limits, or noting event dates.
- The generator computes a valid derangement using Fisher–Yates shuffling with constraint backtracking fallback to ensure every rule is strictly respected.
- Copy individual sealed cards or pre-formatted private messages containing only the recipient and their wishlist to distribute privately.

## Use cases

- Large extended family gatherings where spouses and siblings living together are excluded from gifting to one another.
- Workplace holiday parties requiring predefined spending limits, dates, and exclusion rules across departments or shared project pairs.
- Remote community or friend groups coordinating Kris Kringle assignments across direct messaging apps without signing up for an external service.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can the organizer see all pairings when generating the draw?

Results generate as collapsed, sealed cards so an organizer can copy individual private texts without revealing the full draw to themselves.

### How do I attach a wishlist to a participant's name?

Add a double colon after the person's name on their line, for example: Alice :: warm socks, size M.

### What happens if my exclusion rules make a valid draw impossible?

The constraint solver tests all possibilities and explicitly notifies you that no valid draw exists rather than silently ignoring an exclusion.

### How does the seed field work?

Entering the same alphanumeric seed alongside identical participant and exclusion lists reproduces the exact same pairings every time.

### Is any participant data or wishlist text sent to an external server?

No. The entire pairing calculation and message generation run strictly offline within your local web browser.
