## Overview

## PS1 Retro Texture Converter

Convert local images to RGB555 or 16/256-color textures with ordered dithering and an affine, vertex-snapped 3D preview.

- PNG / JPEG / WebP · ≤10 MiB · ≤32 MP. Source is normalized to ≤1024 px before processing.
- PNG is opaque RGBA8 with limited colors, not an indexed PNG or PS1 TIM/CLUT file. Transparency is flattened onto the chosen background before quantization.
- 320 × 240 viewport · nearest filtering. UV distortion and vertex snapping affect only this preview, not the texture PNG.
- Images stay in this browser. Download before closing or rerunning; nothing is saved automatically.

Creative PS1-inspired processing, not hardware emulation. Image dithering is baked in; it is not the full PS1 framebuffer pipeline. Only the first frame of animated WebP/PNG is used.

## When to use

- Stylizing modern textures for retro low-poly indie games requiring authentic 90s console aesthetics.
- Prototyping retro game assets using an in-browser 3D preview with vertex snapping and affine UV warping.
- Quantizing photographic or illustrated source art to strict 16-color, 256-color, or 15-bit RGB555 palettes with baked ordered dithering.

## How it works

- Upload a PNG, JPEG, or WebP file (up to 10 MiB, 32 MP), which automatically normalizes to a maximum dimension of 1024 px.
- Select your target color quantization mode: RGB555 (15-bit colors), 16-color palette, or 256-color palette, with transparency flattened onto the background.
- Review the resulting texture in the real-time 320x240 low-poly preview using nearest-neighbor filtering, affine texture mapping, and vertex jitter.
- Download the quantized opaque RGBA8 PNG directly to your computer before closing or resetting the session.

## Use cases

- Downsampling character and environmental textures to a 16-color or 256-color palette for retro survival horror game development.
- Creating 15-bit RGB555 UI elements and skybox textures with visible ordered dithering artifacts.
- Testing how textures deform under classic affine UV projection on low-poly geometry before importing them into a game engine.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does this tool export native PS1 TIM or indexed PNG files?

No, it exports standard opaque RGBA8 PNG files with color depth reduced to match retro hardware constraints.

### Are the 3D preview's affine warping and vertex jitter baked into the PNG?

No, affine UV distortion and vertex snapping only render in the 320x240 interactive preview; the downloaded PNG contains only the quantized, dithered texture.

### How are transparent pixels handled in uploaded PNG or WebP images?

Transparency is flattened onto the selected background color prior to color quantization and ordered dithering.

### What happens if I upload an animated WebP or PNG file?

Only the first frame of an animated image is extracted and converted into a retro texture.

### Are my uploaded images uploaded or stored on an external server?

No, all file decoding, quantization, and preview rendering run locally within your web browser.
