## Overview

The Blood Oxygen Content Calculator estimates arterial oxygen content (CaO₂) from hemoglobin, arterial oxygen saturation, and PaO₂. When mixed-venous values and cardiac output are provided, it also calculates CvO₂, the arterial–venous oxygen difference, extraction ratio, oxygen delivery (DO₂), and oxygen consumption (VO₂). This calculator is for reference and is not medical advice.

## Inputs

- **Hemoglobin (g/dL)** (number): Hemoglobin concentration (g/dL).
- **SaO₂ (arterial O₂ sat, fraction)** (number): Arterial oxygen saturation as a fraction (0–1).
- **PaO₂ (mmHg)** (number): Arterial PO₂ (mmHg) from ABG.
- **SvO₂ (mixed venous O₂ sat, fraction, optional)** (number): Mixed venous O₂ saturation (0–1). If provided with PvO₂, the tool computes CvO₂ and a-v O₂ difference.
- **PvO₂ (mixed venous PO₂, mmHg, optional)** (number): Mixed venous PO₂ (mmHg) from PA catheter.
- **Cardiac Output CO (L/min, optional)** (number): Cardiac output (L/min). If provided, the tool computes O₂ delivery (DO₂) and consumption (VO₂).
- **Decimal Places** (number)

## When to use

- Estimate arterial oxygen content from hemoglobin, SaO₂, and PaO₂ values.
- Compare arterial and mixed-venous oxygen content using SvO₂ and PvO₂.
- Calculate oxygen delivery and consumption when cardiac output is available.

## How it works

- Enter hemoglobin in g/dL, arterial oxygen saturation as a fraction from 0 to 1, and PaO₂ in mmHg.
- The calculator applies CaO₂ = 1.34 × Hb × SaO₂ + 0.003 × PaO₂ and reports bound, dissolved, and total oxygen.
- Optionally enter SvO₂ and PvO₂ to calculate CvO₂, the a-v oxygen difference, and the extraction ratio.
- Add cardiac output in L/min to calculate DO₂ and VO₂, with results rounded to the selected decimal places.

## Use cases

- Review arterial oxygen content when assessing the effects of hemoglobin, saturation, and PaO₂.
- Study oxygen extraction by comparing CaO₂ with CvO₂ from mixed-venous measurements.
- Estimate oxygen delivery and consumption for critical care calculations when cardiac output is known.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does CaO₂ mean?

CaO₂ is arterial blood oxygen content, reported in mL O₂/dL.

### What units should I use for SaO₂ and SvO₂?

Enter oxygen saturation as a fraction from 0 to 1, such as 0.97 for 97%.

### Are mixed-venous inputs required?

No. Hemoglobin, SaO₂, and PaO₂ are sufficient for CaO₂. SvO₂ and PvO₂ are optional.

### What does the cardiac output input calculate?

With the required mixed-venous values, cardiac output enables calculations for DO₂ and VO₂.

### Is this calculator medical advice?

No. It provides formula-based estimates and should not replace clinical assessment or professional medical advice.

- [Apgar Score (Newborn 1 & 5 min)](https://elysiatools.com/en/tools/apgar-score): Calculate the Apgar score to assess newborn condition at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. Five signs are each scored 0–2 at both time points: Appearance (skin color), Pulse (heart rate), Grimace (reflex irritability), Activity (muscle tone), and Respiration. Each time point totals 0–10. Interpretation: 7–10 reassuring; 4–6 moderately abnormal (may need assistance); 0–3 critically low (immediate resuscitation). The tool reports both the 1-min and 5-min scores, the change (delta), and per-time-point interpretation. A 5-min score, and especially the change from 1 to 5 min, indicates response to resuscitation; persistent low 5-min scores warrant continued resuscitation and reassessment at 10 min. Derived from Apgar 1953, reaffirmed by ACOG/AAP. The Apgar is a physiologic snapshot at a moment in time and is not, by itself, a marker of asphyxia or long-term neurologic outcome.
