## Overview

A differential-envelope transient shaper in the SPL Transient Designer tradition (Tilgner, 1998). Instead of measuring level against a threshold, it measures the rate of envelope change: a fast peak follower (~1 ms attack) and a slow follower (~15 ms) run in parallel on the mid signal; their normalized difference is positive only while the signal is rising, which is exactly the attack. A second pair of followers — one tracking the natural decay, one with a much slower release that outlasts it — isolates the sustain tail. Attack and sustain gains are therefore independent, level-independent (a ghost note and a rimshot get proportional treatment), and computed per sample. A 5 ms lookahead delay lets the gain curve engage at the very start of each hit. Measured before/after ratios (attack-vs-body and tail-vs-body energy per detected hit) are reported so you can verify the shaping numerically, and a peak guard rescales the output if the boost would clip. Best fed a drum stem or drum bus; on a full mix the tonal balance shifts with the envelope.

## Inputs

- **Drum track or full mix** (file)
- **Attack boost/cut (dB)** (number): e.g. 6 to sharpen, -8 to soften
- **Sustain boost/cut (dB)** (number): e.g. -4 to tighten tails, 3 to extend
- **Character** (select)
- **Output Format** (select)

## When to use

- A drum track lacks punch and needs sharper attack transients without altering ghost note dynamics.
- Overly ringy snare drums or excessive room reverb decays require sustain reduction to tighten the groove.
- Harsh drum clicks or overly aggressive transient spikes need smoothing across multi-velocity performances.

## How it works

- Upload an audio file (such as a drum loop, bus, or individual stem) and select your target attack and sustain gain adjustments in decibels.
- Dual fast and slow envelope followers measure the differential rate-of-change curves to isolate attack transients and sustain body independently of overall volume.
- Choose a response character (Sharp, Standard, or Smooth) and target audio format, then render your track with built-in peak guard rescaling to prevent digital clipping.

## Use cases

- Sharpening kick and snare transients to cut through dense rock, pop, or electronic mixes.
- Tightening boomy room tails and over-ringing snares in acoustic drum recordings.
- Softening piercing hi-hat and cymbal attacks in sample loops or close-mic stems.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does differential envelope shaping differ from standard compression?

Unlike compressors that rely on fixed amplitude thresholds, differential envelope detection tracks the rate of level change, treating ghost notes and loud hits with identical proportional response.

### What do the different character settings do?

Sharp provides the fastest follower reaction for maximum snap, Standard offers a balanced natural response, and Smooth slows envelope tracking to catch wider, gentler rises.

### Will boosting attack or sustain cause audio clipping?

An integrated peak guard automatically rescales output gain if transient boosts exceed maximum digital headroom.

### Why does the processor use a 5 ms lookahead delay?

The 5 ms lookahead ensures the gain modification envelope engages right at the start of transient hits rather than slightly late.

### Can this tool be used on full stereo mixes?

It works best on drum stems or buses, as applying transient shaping to full mixes can shift the tonal balance of sustained instruments like guitars or vocals.
