## Overview

Estimate annual personal CO₂e from diet, electricity, grid mix, natural gas, petrol and diesel, short- and long-haul flights, public transit, and mixed waste. The calculator returns a category breakdown, total tonnes, and comparisons with the 4.7 t world average and the 2.3 t Paris-aligned 1.5 °C level using fixed activity emission factors.

## Inputs

- **Diet pattern** (select)
- **Electricity use (kWh/yr)** (number): Household or personal electricity consumption per year.
- **Grid carbon intensity** (select)
- **Natural gas use (m³/yr)** (number): Heating/cooking gas — factor 2.02 kg CO₂e per m³.
- **Gasoline car use (L/yr)** (number): Fuel burned in petrol cars — factor 2.31 kg CO₂e per litre.
- **Diesel car use (L/yr)** (number): Fuel burned in diesel cars — factor 2.68 kg CO₂e per litre.
- **Short-haul flights (passenger-km/yr)** (number): Domestic/regional flying — factor 0.15 kg CO₂e per passenger-km, radiative forcing excluded.
- **Long-haul flights (passenger-km/yr)** (number): Intercontinental flying — factor 0.11 kg CO₂e per passenger-km, radiative forcing excluded.
- **Public transit (passenger-km/yr)** (number): Bus and rail travel — factor 0.04 kg CO₂e per passenger-km.
- **Mixed waste (kg/yr)** (number): Landfilled mixed household waste — factor 0.5 kg CO₂e per kg.

## When to use

- When you need a fast activity-based snapshot of personal greenhouse-gas emissions from food, home energy, cars, flights, transit and waste.
- When you want to see which category (diet, car fuel, flying, electricity) dominates your total before choosing reduction steps.
- When you want to compare a typical lifestyle with a lower-carbon profile against the same world-average and 1.5 °C benchmarks.

## How it works

- Choose a diet pattern that already includes its annual CO₂e (high-meat 2.6 t through vegan 1.1 t).
- Enter yearly electricity (kWh) and grid carbon intensity, plus natural gas (m³), gasoline and diesel (L), flight passenger-km, transit km and mixed waste (kg).
- Each activity is multiplied by its listed factor (for example 2.31 kg CO₂e per litre of gasoline or 0.11 kg per long-haul passenger-km); categories are summed and shown as tonnes plus shares.
- The result also reports ratios to 4.7 t (world average) and 2.3 t (1.5 °C target). Flight factors exclude radiative forcing; values are teaching approximations.

## Use cases

- Individuals estimating yearly personal emissions from diet, home energy and travel.
- Educators showing how diet choice, grid carbon intensity and flying change a personal footprint.
- Households spotting the biggest lever (meat, car fuel or long-haul flights) for cutting CO₂e.

## Frequently asked questions

### What activities does the calculator cover?

Diet pattern, household electricity times grid intensity, natural gas, petrol and diesel cars, short-haul and long-haul passenger-km, public transit and landfilled mixed waste. Other goods and services are not included.

### Are the emission factors official national values?

No. They are rounded teaching factors (for example 2.02 kg CO₂e per m³ of gas, 0.5 kg per kg of waste). Use official country factors for formal GHG reports.

### Why might flight totals look lower than other tools?

Short-haul uses 0.15 kg and long-haul 0.11 kg CO₂e per passenger-km. Radiative forcing (often about 1.9×) is excluded and noted in the output.

### How are results compared with climate targets?

The total in t CO₂e/yr is shown against the 4.7 t world average and the 2.3 t per-person 1.5 °C-aligned level, together with the largest category and its share.

### Should I enter household or personal numbers?

Diet, car fuel, flights and transit should match the person. Electricity, gas and waste can be household totals or your share of them.

- [Bioavailability Calculator (F = AUC_po · Dose_iv / AUC_iv · Dose_po)](https://elysiatools.com/en/tools/bioavailability-calculator): Calculate the absolute bioavailability F of an extravascular (typically oral) dose: F = (AUC_po · Dose_iv) / (AUC_iv · Dose_po), where AUC_po and AUC_iv are the areas under the concentration-time curve after oral and IV dosing, and the doses correct for any difference in amount administered. F is dimensionless and lies in \[0, 1\]; IV bioavailability is by definition 1, while oral F < 1 reflects incomplete absorption and/or first-pass metabolism. AUC can be in any consistent unit (e.g. mg·h/L) since it cancels out of the ratio. Valid only for linear pharmacokinetics, the same drug molecule, and doses within the linear range. Valid only for linear pharmacokinetics — NOT for Michaelis-Menten drugs (phenytoin, high-dose ethanol) or multi-compartment distribution. Reference: theophylline Vd ≈ 0.45 L/kg, t½ ≈ 8 h.
