- **Keywords:** audio, SNR, signal-to-noise ratio, noise reference, recording measurement, mean power

## Overview

Select non-overlapping program and noise-only intervals entirely within the recording. Different interval lengths are compared by mean power, not total energy. The report distinguishes total/noise, 10log10(Pprogram/Pnoise), from corrected SNR, 10log10((Pprogram−Pnoise)/Pnoise), which assumes stationary additive noise uncorrelated with the signal. Raw and per-region DC-removed powers are reported; the checkbox chooses the displayed basis. Zero noise or nonpositive corrected power gives no finite SNR. Near-full-scale samples and noise-reference changes above 6 dB across 100 ms blocks trigger warnings, not a certification. No speech detection, denoising, downmixing, normalization or resampling. SNR is not an intelligibility or quality score. Limits: 100 MiB, 180 seconds, 8–96 kHz, mono/stereo. ZIP: JSON, CSV, SVG, HTML and README.

## Inputs

- **Audio File** (file)
- **Program Start (seconds)** (number)
- **Program End (seconds)** (number)
- **Noise Start (seconds)** (number)
- **Noise End (seconds)** (number)
- **Remove DC per Region** (checkbox)

## When to use

- Evaluating ambient room tone and preamplifier hiss in studio microphone recordings.
- Measuring independent noise floors and signal ratios across separate stereo channels.
- Auditing audio deliverables against technical signal-to-noise thresholds before downstream production.

## How it works

- Upload a mono or stereo audio file up to 180 seconds and 100 MiB in supported formats like WAV, FLAC, or MP3.
- Define non-overlapping time boundaries in seconds for both the noise-only reference region and the active program region.
- Optionally enable per-region DC removal to subtract offset biases before calculating mean segment power.
- Download the generated ZIP archive containing numerical SNR metrics, stability warnings, visual SVG plots, and tabular data.

## Use cases

- Voiceover artists verifying low noise floor during room tone lead-ins before speaking.
- Field recordists evaluating ambient background noise levels relative to acoustic target signals.
- Audio QA teams inspecting incoming speech recordings to verify compliance with production SNR baselines.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does the tool compare regions of different durations?

Calculations evaluate mean power over each selected region rather than total energy, allowing accurate comparison between unequal time spans.

### What is the difference between total/noise ratio and corrected SNR?

Total/noise compares total program power to noise power, whereas corrected SNR subtracts the estimated stationary noise power from the program signal.

### Why does the tool output an undefined or non-finite SNR?

An undefined SNR occurs if the noise reference has zero power or if measured noise power is equal to or greater than total program power.

### Does the tool apply audio filtering, denoising, or resampling?

No, it analyzes native samples directly and does not perform speech detection, noise suppression, normalisation, channel downmixing, or sample rate conversion.

### What sample rates and channel layouts are supported?

The tool supports mono and stereo audio files with sample rates ranging between 8 kHz and 96 kHz.
