## Overview

Upload up to 100 MiB / 180 seconds of mono or stereo audio at 8–96 kHz. Each time bucket reports a linearly interpolated low percentile of nonzero short-window RMS amplitudes, then converts it to dBFS (RMS 1 = 0 dBFS). Digital-zero windows are counted separately; all-silent buckets have null proxy values, not an invented floor. Partial windows at bucket/file ends are retained. Changes compare adjacent eligible buckets only. Sparse windows and a 10th–90th percentile spread above 12 dB are flagged. This is an engineering heuristic, not noise isolation, VAD, a standardized noise measurement, or an audio-quality score. Speech, music, gain and nonstationary sounds can affect it. Nothing is normalized, resampled or downmixed. Download JSON, CSV, SVG and an offline HTML report in one ZIP.

## Inputs

- **Audio File** (file)
- **Short Window (ms)** (number)
- **Time Bucket (seconds)** (number)
- **Low Percentile (%)** (number)
- **Change Threshold (dB)** (number)

## When to use

- Detect sudden shifts in ambient background sound or preamp gain across consecutive segments of a recording.
- Verify that sections intended to be digital silence contain true zero-value frames rather than low-level electrical hum.
- Audit stereo recordings for channel-imbalanced background noise without performing invasive filtering or downmixing.

## How it works

- The tool slices raw unmixed audio channels into short analysis frames (20–500 ms) and computes the linear RMS amplitude of each frame.
- Frames with pure digital silence are counted independently, while nonzero frames within each user-defined time bucket are aggregated into a selectable low percentile (1–50%).
- Percentile values are converted to dBFS (0 dBFS = RMS 1.0) and compared against neighboring buckets to flag sudden shifts exceeding the configured decibel threshold.
- Results, along with sparse-window warnings and 10th-to-90th percentile spread flags, are exported into a ZIP archive containing JSON, CSV, SVG plots, and an offline HTML report.

## Use cases

- Podcast and voiceover quality control to pinpoint where background room tone or air-conditioning hum escalated during a take.
- Field recording verification to locate mic preamp adjustments or hardware cabling issues across long takes.
- Archival audio ingest checks to distinguish intentional digital mute cuts from continuous analog tape hiss.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does this tool perform audio denoising or voice activity detection (VAD)?

No. It is an engineering heuristic proxy measuring low-level percentile RMS values over time; it does not isolate noise, run VAD algorithms, or grade quality.

### What happens if a time bucket contains only complete digital silence?

The proxy reports a null value rather than an arbitrary floor, and digital-zero frames are tallied in a dedicated counter.

### Are incomplete frames at the end of files or buckets discarded?

No. Partial frames at the end of buckets and file boundaries are preserved and included in the RMS calculations.

### Does the utility modify, resample, or downmix uploaded audio?

No. The file is analyzed strictly in its native format and sample rate (8–96 kHz) on independent mono or stereo channels without normalization.

### What does a percentile spread flag greater than 12 dB indicate?

It flags dynamic volatility within that bucket, showing that the 10th to 90th percentile gap exceeds 12 dB, typically caused by fluctuating signals or speech.
