# AI Prompt A/B Variant Generator

Generate controlled A/B variants of a prompt across the persona, tone/style, output format, and constraints dimensions, then compare them side by side with a heuristic rubric score and a word-level diff against the baseline. A reproducible way to test how a prompt behaves under different framings before picking one for production.

## Overview

A controlled prompt-variant generator for prompt engineers and PMs:

1. **Base prompt** — the prompt you want to stress-test.
2. **Vary dimensions** — pick which axes to vary: persona (who speaks), tone/style, output format, and constraints. Each axis has a small library of values.
3. **Number of variants** — how many to generate (A is always the baseline; B, C, … each vary a distinct combination of axes).
4. **Render mode** — side-by-side cards (with per-axis rubric bars), a diff view (word-level diff of each variant against baseline A), or a full comparison table.
5. **Rubric** — each variant is scored 0–100 on specificity, structure, constraint clarity, and robustness using deterministic heuristics, so variants are comparable and reproducible.

Unlike a single-point "rewrite", this explores the variation space so you can see how the same intent changes across framings. Generation is deterministic and runs locally (no model calls), so results are reproducible for A/B comparison. Toggle "Generate with AI" to optionally refine variants with a live model (needs an API key).

## Inputs

- **Base prompt** (textarea): The prompt whose variants you want to generate. Its task intent is preserved across variants.
- **Vary dimensions** (select): Which axes to vary. Defaults to persona, tone, and format.
- **Number of variants** (number): How many variants to generate, including baseline A.
- **Render mode** (select)
- **Temperature (creativity 0–1)** (number): Higher values push variants toward more concrete, specific phrasing.
- **Generate with AI** (checkbox): When on, rewrite each variant (except baseline A) with DeepSeek (deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash) for production-ready prose. Off = deterministic heuristic output. Needs an API key.

## When to use

- When you need to optimize a base prompt by testing how different personas, tones, or constraints alter its structure.
- When you want to compare prompt variations side-by-side using a standardized, heuristic rubric score instead of manual guessing.
- When you need to visualize exact word-level differences between a baseline prompt and its generated variants.

## How it works

- Input your baseline prompt into the editor to establish the core task intent.
- Select the dimensions you want to vary, such as persona, tone/style, output format, or constraints, and set the number of variants.
- Choose your render mode—cards, diff, or table—and optionally enable AI-driven refinement with a live model.
- Review the generated variants alongside their heuristic rubric scores and word-level diffs to select the best option.

## Use cases

- A/B testing a customer support prompt to find the most empathetic yet concise tone.
- Refining a data extraction prompt to enforce strict JSON output constraints.
- Evaluating how assigning different expert personas affects the detail level of a technical explanation prompt.

## Frequently asked questions

### How are the rubric scores calculated?

Scores are calculated locally using deterministic heuristics that evaluate specificity, structure, constraint clarity, and robustness.

### Do I need an API key to use this tool?

No, the default generation runs locally and deterministically. An API key is only required if you enable the 'Generate with AI' option.

### What dimensions can I vary?

You can vary the persona (who speaks), tone/style, output format, and specific constraints of the prompt.

### What does the diff view show?

The diff view highlights word-level additions and deletions between your baseline prompt and each generated variant.

### Can I control how creative the AI variants are?

Yes, adjusting the temperature slider pushes the AI-generated variants toward more concrete and specific phrasing.
